Revise IEEE/ACM and ABET curriculum
Facilitator: Sarah Douglas, University of Oregon
Add curricular standards for i18n competence affecting computer science areas such as global SE, HCI, ethics, project management and communication. Recommend foreign language, global history and business as general education. Recommend international experience.
Goal: To write a brief, 4-5 page white paper recommending the addition of i18n topics to the IEEE/ACM Curriculum 2001 for the B.S. degree in Computer Science. This will critique and amplify the recommendations of the IEEE/ACM Computer Science Curriculum Review Taskforce in July 2008.
Topics (Paper’s Table of Contents):
- Review the original IEEE/ACM Computing Curricula 2001: Computer Science.
- Review the recommendations for internationalization given by the Computer Science Curriculum Review Taskforce in July 2008
- Review the recommendations of the NSF CPATH i18n model curriculum
- Specific proposed recommendations to the IEEE/ACM Curriculum Committees
- Specify benefits & challenges to success at integrating these topics into the CS curriculum
Pre-Beijing Workshop Assignment
- Ready to discuss and contribute to topics in above Table of Contents.
- Read these 2 papers (see more information below) by Beijing meeting
- IEEE/ACM Computing Curricula 2001: Computer Science (December 15,
2001)
- IEEE/ACM CS Curriculum Review Taskforce Interim Review (July 2008)
Be ready to answer these questions:
- Does the original Computing Curricula 2001 accommodate
internationalization?
- What are the internationalization proposals of the Interim Review
Taskforce?
- How do these proposals compare with the findings of the CPATH i18n
meetings?
Beijing workshop goals
Develop the content for the white paper.
By May 2009
Final paper to be completed by May 2009.
Additional Information
The basis for the curriculum is IEEE/ACM Computing Curricula 2001: Computer Science. The Final Report (December 15, 2001). This is for the BS degree in Computer Science.
After several months of work, the IEEE/ACM Computer Science Curriculum Review Taskforce has nearly completed the interim review of the CS2001 [undergraduate] volume. The review can be accessed within a wiki at http://wiki.acm.org/cs2001/index.php July 2008.
There is a section on “International Considerations” in Chapter 4.3 of the wiki document.
