Working group: i18n at the Wuxi International University
Facilitators: Zhong Chen, Peking University, and Andrzej Proskurowski, University of Oregon
Ultimate Goal: Implement a CPATH i18n presence at the Wuxi campus through curricular and extra-curricular offerings.
Short description: Last May, Professor Chen Zhong described plans for the International University in Wuxi near Shanghai. This morning’s sessions detailing ideas for infusing computer science curriculum with international aspects should ultimately result in courses delivered by CPATH i18n partners. The Wuxi campus may offer an excellent environment for this delivery.
The working group session will include:
- A short description of the plans for the Wuxi International University.
-
Discussion of a proposal to develop a CPATH i18n presence at the Wuxi campus by means of programs such as:
- Professors from Pacific Rim universities coming to Wuxi to teach courses in their areas of expertise, possibly bringing students with them;
- Special topics tutorials taught by leading researchers in the field (similar to the "Summer School on Topics in Programming Languages" a very successful series which we have run at the University of Oregon for seven years with the support of NSF and corporate sponsors, see http://www.cs.uoregon.edu/activities/summerschool/summer08/)
- Courses with focus on internationalization, such as: Scientific Writing in English, Cross-cultural Communication, Leadership and Entrepreneurship, and other topics being developed by CPATH i18n partners.
- Discussion of logistics, funding opportunities, and other practical aspects.
